Aceh Shooting Probe Runs Into a Wall

Banda Aceh, TAG - The police investigation into the attempted shooting of a district head in Aceh has taken a strange turn — bullets from the scene of the crime have reportedly gone missing.

“We have not succeeded in retrieving the bullets from inside the car that was shot at,” Adj. Sr. Comr. Hari Apriyono, chief of the Bener Meriah Police, said on Friday. “This is quite strange because logically, since the car was shot at, we should have found the bullets inside the car.”

Several shots were fired at a car carrying Bener Meriah district head Tagore A.B. on Wednesday night. The car’s front windshield was shattered by the gunshots, but Tagore and his driver managed to escape the incident unharmed.

“Police dismantled the car looking for the bullets on Thursday,” Hari added. “But we have not found anything, even though the bullets shattered the car’s front windshield.

“We don’t believe they were thrown out,” he said. “It is not possible that the district head threw out the bullets.”

On Thursday, Tagore explained that he and his driver were returning to Bener Meriah from Takengon, the capital of neighboring Central Aceh district, when the shooting occurred.

“When we arrived at the narrow Simpang Teririt Bridge, we were targeted with gunshots from the left side of the car. The shots came from two cars,” he said.

Tagore said he suspected that the shooting was premeditated, because the attackers must have known that he was traveling without a police escort.
On Friday, Hari said he would look into why Tagore had insisted on traveling without an escort.

“Two days before this incident, the district head chose to go to his home in Takengon accompanied only by a driver, without a police or military escort,” Hari said. “We do not know why. He almost always has an escort.”

Hari added that the investigation was continuing with the help of the Aceh Police, including Sr. Comr. Bambang Soetjahjo, director of security and intelligence, and Adj. Sr. Comr. Teuku Saladin, deputy director of general crimes.

“We have searched the crime scene,” Hari said. “We also got witness statements, including statements from a police officer whose home is about 150 meters from the scene of the crime.

“The witnesses heard four gunshots. The thing is, if there were shots fired, then where are the bullet casings?”

Tagore revealed on Thursday that he had been threatened before. “Two months ago I received a death threat by phone, but I just ignored it,” he said.

“I never thought I’d be the target of a shooting. Was [the shooting] related to the threat? I don’t know,” he added. “I’ll let the police do their job in uncovering the motive and catching the perpetrators.”[]
